A little-known coal mining district emerged in Putnam County, WV at the close of the Civil War. By the mid-1940s, large-scale underground mining ceased forever. Among the coal villages was Plymouth, a community along the northern bank of the Kanawha River.
While researching Campbell’s Creek, it became clear that Plymouth's story, its coal and river transportation history, and its connection to Campbell’s Creek (nearly 25 miles away) were inseparable from the region’s industrial legacy.
This book is an appendix to the Campbell’s Creek volumes, providing insights and avoiding repetition while honoring Plymouth’s miners, riverboat workers, and families. Though the mining town no longer exists, its legacy survives through parks, wildlife areas, and this detailed tribute.
